The expeditions

The Fondation Pacifique expeditions are designed and conducted using a multidisciplinary approach and in a spirit of shared experience

This philosophy translates into a constant search for synergies between the scientific, socio-educational and cultural aspects of these expeditions and specific missions.

Upcoming expeditions

By 2020-2024 the Fondation Pacifique will be embarking on two future expeditions aboard the ketch Fleur de Passion and the 30m Mauritius, with the aim of enlarging upon the findings of The Ocean Mapping Expedition regarding scientific and environmental issues, each vessel sailing in different latitudes.

These future expeditions will be part of a context characterized by the United Nations’ decision, in late 2017, to ensure that the period 2021-2030 becomes the "Decade of ocean science for sustainable development".

The Ocean Mapping Expedition

From April 2015 until September 2019, the Fondation Pacifique has been involved in The Ocean Mapping Expedition, a voyage around the world following the route taken 500 years ago by Ferdinand Magellan, on what was the first circumnavigation of the globe.

During this long-distance adventure aboard the 33m sailboat Fleur de Passion, four scientific programmes are being conducted:

  • Monitoring greenhouse gases on the ocean surface, in partnership with the Aquatic Physics Group of Geneva University Faculty of Science
  • Mapping noise pollution on the oceans, in partnership with the Laboratory of Bioacoustic Applications (LAB) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona
  • Mapping meso and microplastic pollution, in partnership with the Oceaneye association in Geneva
  • Examining the health of coral reefs, in partnership with the CoralWatch project of the University of Queensland in Brisbane

The Ocean Mapping Expedition has also carried out a one-off mapping mission on Great Barrier Reef, in partnership with the University of Queensland's Remote Sensing Research Center (RSRC) in Brisbane.

The expedition additionally includes a shared experience component which takes the form of welcoming teenagers on board ship, as part of the socio-educational programme Jeunes en mer, in partnership with the Association Pacifique in Geneva together with the institutions of the Canton of Geneva.

Finally, it gives individuals the opportunity to embark as crew members and thus have the chance to become privileged witnesses and spokespersons for the environmental issues that lie at the heart of the expedition.
